Empty the Tank privacy policy

Last updated: 23 October 2026

Empty the Tank is an indoor cycling training app for iPad made by impaktfull BV (“we”). This policy explains what happens with your data when you use the app and this website. impaktfull BV is the controller for the processing described here.

The short version

Empty the Tank has no account, no server, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Your rides, heart rate, profile and workouts stay on your iPad. Two things can reach the internet:

Data stored on your iPad

This data is stored only in the app’s storage on your iPad. We cannot see it. It is not sent to us or anyone else. It is included in your iPad’s own backup (iCloud or a computer) if you use that, under Apple’s terms.

Backups and exports

You decide when your data leaves your iPad: when you export a ride as a FIT file, export a workout or make an Empty the Tank backup (a .tank file), the file goes where you send it through the share sheet or the Files app. A backup contains everything listed above, and a FIT file contains the ride with its heart rate data, which is health data. Once you share such a file, it is under your control and the terms of wherever you send it; we never receive a copy. The app deletes its own temporary copy when the share sheet closes.

Update check

At launch, and when the app comes back after more than a day, it downloads https://emptythetank.app/version.json to see whether a newer version exists or an update is required. The request sends no identifier, no profile and no ride data. The file is served by GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc., a Microsoft company, in the United States), which receives your IP address and the request’s technical details (such as the user agent with the app and iPadOS version) and keeps them in its server logs for security and operations, under GitHub’s own privacy statement. We do not receive or keep these logs.

Legal basis (GDPR): our legitimate interest in telling you about updates that fix bugs or keep your trainer safe to use (article 6(1)(f)). GitHub may process the data in the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Crash reports (only if you turn them on)

Crash reports are off by default. If you choose “Send crash reports” in onboarding or in Settings > Data, the app sends a report to Sentry when it crashes or hits an unexpected error. Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) is the service we use to find and fix bugs, and processes the reports for us as our processor under a data processing agreement.

A report contains:

A report never contains your rides, your heart rate, your profile or your workouts. It is not linked to your name or an account, but because of the installation id and the IP address the report is sent from, it is pseudonymous rather than anonymous data. No release health sessions, performance data or analytics are sent.

Where and how long: reports are stored in Sentry’s [Sentry data region: EU or US, to confirm in the Sentry organisation settings] region and kept for at most [retention: confirm the event retention of the Sentry plan, for example 90 days]. [IP addresses: confirm that “Prevent Storing of IP Addresses” is on in the Sentry project settings, then state that Sentry does not store them.] Sentry may process data in the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses.

Legal basis (GDPR): your consent (article 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw it at any time by turning crash reports off in Settings > Data; the app then stops sending reports. Withdrawing does not affect reports sent before.

Bluetooth

Empty the Tank uses Bluetooth only to connect to your own smart trainer, heart rate sensor and shifter. It does not use your location.

This website

emptythetank.app is a static website hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub receives your IP address and browser details in its server logs when you visit. The site sets no cookies and uses no analytics or tracking.

Children

Empty the Tank is not aimed at children and does not knowingly collect any data from them.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct and delete your personal data, to restrict its processing, to data portability, to withdraw your consent at any time, and to object to processing based on our legitimate interest (article 21), such as the update check.

The data on your iPad is under your control: edit it in the app, export it with a backup, or delete it with Settings > Data > Delete all data or by deleting the app. For crash reports, contact us; since they are not linked to your name, we may need details such as the date and time of a crash to find a specific one.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority. In Belgium this is the Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit / Autorité de protection des données, Drukpersstraat 35 / Rue de la Presse 35, 1000 Brussels, www.dataprotectionauthority.be.
